Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center | Feb. 7 through 18, Alice Tully Hall
Here’s a wonderful chance to familiarize yourself with the genius of Ludwig van Beethoven, courtesy of a series of concerts presented by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Delve into the German maestro’s catalogue of string quartets, played in the order they were composed between 1798 and 1826. Come to each concert to appreciate the incredible groundbreaking leaps in imagination and technique Beethoven made from composition to composition, or just treat yourself to a one-off night of immortal music, impeccably performed by the Danish String Quartet.
Feb. 14 and 15 | Rose Theater
Could there be a more romantic way to mark Valentine’s Day than spending it in the company of jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves? The New York Times describes her as “The most admired jazz diva since Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday.” Indeed, her talent for melting hearts with soulful vocals and hypnotizing storytelling is practically unsurpassed. Score a pair of tickets to this show and your partner will still be talking about it next Valentine’s Day.
Feb. 15 through March 14 | Metropolitan Opera House
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “fiancée swapping” opera arrives at the Metropolitan Opera House, with a distinctly NYC twist. Phelim McDermott’s staging brings the action to the raucous boardwalks of Coney Island — with a backdrop of big dippers and big wheels to go with the big voices of soprano Nicole Car, mezzo-soprano Serena Malfi, tenor Ben Bliss, and bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni. This is a unique way to revel in a European opera classic, with all the fun of the fair.
March 11 through 20 | Bruno Walter Auditorium
So accomplished are Zeshan B’s Indo-Pakistani renditions of soul classics, urban love songs, Memphis blues, and civil-rights anthems, that he was invited to perform at the White House at the request of President Barack Obama. Though this incredible performer sings in a range of languages — from Urdu to Punjabi to English — his songs of heartache, injustice, and loss resonate universally. This series of six shows at Bruno Walter Auditorium is targeted at a younger audience and makes for the ideal family outing.
